While people and crowds can give the illusion of safety in numbers, they are also signs of potential dangerous situations. Thieves can use so called flash mobs to crowd a person and use that opportunity to steal or commit other crimes. Many of us have heard of random acts of violence where the innocent bystander is hurt just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time- such as gang violence or terrorism. Although public places can carry dangerous elements it is important not to live in fear and not follow the crowd while remain in control. It is vital that you notice what is happening around you, as it will allow you to notice situations before they escalate. Secondly, it is essential that you do not panic and remain calm. The best way to remain calm is to prepare in advance. For example when you enter a room always look for an exit strategy which you could use in an emergency situation. Many people also find that having even the most basic CPR training or a self defense class is enough to instill self-confidence. That being said in a violent situation your first course of action is to run, second to hide (usually behind large heave objects such as doors, and only when it absolutely necessary and your life is in danger to fight. Running away first takes you out of harm’s way and allows you to get to the proper authorities and potentially help other people may be involved. Once you are in a safe place it is the time to help others, do not assume that someone else will make that 911 call, and do that yourself to ensure the safety of your companions. By following the previously mentioned guidelines you can stay safe in crowded or public emergency situation.
